Not all parts are that interesting (that wheel of time sometimes turns pretty slow), but enjoy it you will...

  4. I love long reads, you're talking to someone who has read the entire DUNE series, including prequels and sequels a few times over ;-)

  5. Speaking of long reads, I looked across the internet and found a reasonable reading guide/order to the main Dark Tower Content, and this is my planned reading for 2011-2012:

    01. IT: (I'm NOT reading that one.) "Mentions the Turtle, the Rose, and is (seemingly) unrelated enough to be an enjoyable story by itself. The proper place to start."

    02. Night Shift: "Read the short story Jerusalem's Lot...the prequel to Salem's Lot."

    03. Salem's Lot: "Read this and remember Father Donald Callahan. Mark him very well, because he will return."

    04. Night Shift: "Read the short Story "One for the Road" the sequel to Salem's Lot. Also, read the short story "Night Surf" while you're at it."

    05. The Stand: "Introduces Randall Flagg, the main antagonist (sort of) in the Dark Tower Series. And the world of the Plague shows up later in the series also."

    06. The Eyes of the Dragon: "Flagg appears again. Thomas and Dennis will be mentioned in Roland's travels. This is kind of like what "The Hobbit" was to the Lord of the Rings."

    07. Everything's Eventual: "Read the short story, "The Little Sisters of Eluria." It is an earlier tale of Roland and the "unofficial" start of The Dark Tower saga."

    08. The Gunslinger: "Now you're getting into the meat of things. This is the start of it all. Book 1."

    09. The Drawing of the Three: "Book 2. The adventure continues. You don't have to read Eyes of the Dragon RIGHT before just because Thomas and Dennis were mentioned in these pages."

    10. The Waste Lands: "Book 3. Forward like a steam engine...or a monorail."

    11. Insomnia: "Now we have to break the flow just for a bit. Back to Derry. Lots of Tower business in this one and the Crimson King. Also remember little Patrick Danville who appears later in book 7."

    12. Wizard and Glass: "Book 4. And we weren't really even gone long enough to break the flow of the story. You'll notice the Plague world from the Stand in this one...And you didn't have to read all 1145 pages right before this book to break the flow."

    13. Hearts In Atlantis: "Another quick interlude. Definitely read, "Low Men in Yellow Coats," but also read the rest because it's a beautiful series of stories. Remember the Men in Yellow Coats and Ted Brautigan. You might even spot Randall Flagg/Walter/Marten mentioned within these pages."

    14. Wolves of the Calla: "Book 5. Back to the main story. Read this one and you'll see Father Callahan if it do ya fine."

    15. Song of Susannah: "Book 6. The story continues without any breaks."

    16. Black House: "This story deals heavily with breakers and the Crimson King. This story actually takes place chronologically after book 6, where Susannah could still see the light coming from the King's Forge. The destruction of that Forge is told in these pages. "Do I need to read the Talisman first? Nope, because the Talisman has very few DT connections and this story pretty much stands on it's own."

    17. Skeleton Crew: "Read the short story, "The Mist." The creatures are very similar to those from Todash space."

    18. Everything's Eventual: "Read the short story Everything's Eventual to get introduced to Dinky Earnshaw, who appears in book 7 of the DT alongside Ted Brautigan from "Low Men in Yellow Coats.""

    19. The Dark Tower: "Book 7, the Final Book (and one of my favorites in the series). Now you're done. Feel free to research or read some of the other books I did not mention, such as From a Buick 8, Bag of Bones, Rose Madder, but I guarantee you won't get more than a few sentences of connections in each book to the world of the Dark Tower. Don't say I didn't tell you so."

  6. Wow, are you sure? I read most of these and most of the references totally elude me ;-) Tjat's why i can re-read books, I don't remember 3/4s of them anyway.

  7. LOL, I might just watch some of the movies... Somewhere I own Salem's Lot. and already saw most of IT, and all of The Stand, so now it's mostly short stories. Barbie Wolfe has every King book out there, so I know I can borrow some of them to get the short stories. I'll probably skip something here and there as well. Also remember, that's why I scheduled it from 2011-2012. LOL.

  8. Are you planning to read the Dark Tower..? I have to admit that I did not really like the series as a whole.
Would not recommend it to anyone (am even considering throwing away the books to make room in my cupboard...).

    [ and I HATE throwing away books... ] :-)

Anyway: good luck getting through the series; let's hope for lot's of rainy days in 2011-2012...

  9. I plan to borrow the books from friends and relatives. If I decide I don't care for it, and need to abandon the series, I can stop without spending money on books and without having to throw any books away. Win-win. ;-)
